This means that we cannot know now what specific job profiles might be the most important and sought after in years to come. Apart from digitalisation, there are a growing number of global problems related to terrorism, combatting global warming and energy supply crises which will also influence our lives, economy and business world. On top of these issues there are new trends in consumption patterns and lifestyles that could also lead to entirely new professions. ## Aims and Methods of VET2TUNING Most people have been wondering about the aims and methods of VET2TUNING project as well as how we might be able to promote vocational training with the help of researchers with many years of research experience who are working in practice-oriented programmes. ## The role of Cologne University for researchers Currently, there are three main areas of research at universities which are related to this question: - **1. Acquiring Research Results:** They are either experience-based or knowledge-based results which have already been generated from previous research projects and are available to interested parties. Professors have the task of informing users about new research results in their field of expertise with a strong vocational connection because these can then be used in further vocational training. For example Wirtschaft und Beruf NRW e.V., which are education and training specialist for North Rhine Westphalia is using many of our measures or models to help them cope with economic structural changes brought by digitalisation. - **2. Developing new knowledge:** This includes collecting further knowledge from academic research on specific vocational fields, or developing new knowledge for practical application in businesses. - **3. Dialogic Process** Engaging with interested parties from different countries provides a supplementing exchange of ideas that then becomes an invaluable source for new insights. All three areas of research appear to be relevant for establishing a practical role for professional expertise available at universities, as well as for vocational training for companies, municipalities and districts. But some aspects are only applicable to different groups or fields. ## What are the research topics? In our University we have for example analysed the interaction between machines and humans in automated production to help us to get more insights into human work behaviour in robotic cells by monitoring their interdependencies and interactions during individual processes and trainings involving the machine work. The aim is to take these insights back into the companies where this information can then be used in their further research on automation in industrial production processes. Such kind of research results are already being used by companies involved in VET2TUNING project. Besides this we have a strong practical focus on logistics research. By using videographic studies, we can take possession of relevant information on material flows in logistics and use this information to optimize work systems so much so that they can reduce mistakes and employee frustration levels. We have also constructed an experiment which can indicate if our workplace concepts or job descriptions are too bad or too good for employee engagement levels and overall performance potential within industry. Our procedure also aims to gain insights into employees’ wellbeing at work by studying changes in their emotional states they experience from day to day whilst they are working. We then process all this industry-oriented research into literature which then becomes available for vocational schools. ## How do we research this? Our research methods concentrate on interacting with people who actually use machines or equipment in actual work situations rather than simply observing them from afar like a normal researcher might do. What we do is record workflows with video cameras and sensors and then analyse the concept behind these workflows in order to understand exactly how they take place in practice. ## How do we use this research? Vocational schools often struggle with teaching methods that are too generalised with little relation to actual practice and would instead like methods that are based on practical examples. For this reason vocational courses could become more interesting if we use detailed examples from everyday work situations to illustrate our teaching points. For example we have developed a concept for robotic training on construction sites for construction superintendents to learn about automation with simulations for different situations they encounter in their workplace so that they can train how to handle new technical equipment in specific construction situations or tasks. We have also developed a toolbox which gives students access to different kinds of video recordings which vividly demonstrate various kinds of work activities like erecting ceilings or installing street lamps so that they can learn about specific safety or physical requirements they need to follow in order to efficiently complete their tasks. ##How do we exchange these experiences? During our meetings we found that a big part of our discussion arose precisely around these themes and especially how we can make use of these research experiences with the help of VET2TUNING project. Some trainees who came along to meetings had their own ideas about how to use technology in work situations - video-cameras or sensors, both flow cameras and ones that provide information about emotions – as tools for gaining insights into current situations where they thought their learning processes could be improved. We also talked about exchanges between age groups – both in terms of knowledge about technology as well as the transition from school into working life and back again into further education. We also thought about sharing our findings with other research institutes within universities so that we could compare our results and research methods. Our experience was that we shared a similar focus on building networks with partners in other countries as well as cooperation between universities and workplaces. We therefore decided to gather all our findings about current practices at various levels and collect the results within Anglo-Saxon or German-speaking countries to
